Picking The Best Cloth Diaper Cover For Prefolds

Post may contain affiliate links.

We have been asked many times about covers. The choices are numerous and people are very loyal to certain brands. I thought I would write a little about what I think makes a cover better than the next.

For me, I like the Rumparooz One Size Cloth Diaper Cover. (seen here). Rumparooz brand is affordable and mine have lasted through 2 kids and still going strong! My second choice (close tie) would be the TotBots, but they are hard to find anymore! (check here)

Crucial Points For Best Cloth Diaper Cover For Prefolds

Breathability: Is this really a big deal? To some, it is but, in reality, it’s not that big of an issue. Now I know that people are going to have some big-time comments about this but the truth of the matter is that if you are changing your child’s diaper on a regular interval, having a non-breathable cover is not an issue. Here’s why; the moisture will be too great for any breathable cover to handle. So do you put your child in a vinyl cover? No. The breathability of a cover is more important when the diaper is DRY. This allows the normal heat and moisture to “breath” keeping your baby more comfortable. Once the baby voids the real purpose of a cover is to hold in the moisture to prevent leaking. So the real choice in picking a cover is how it fits.

Fit: A cover that fits usually has at least 2 of the 3 following design functions.

  1. Gusseted legs. This helps form a better seal around your baby’s legs. Some are thin and some are thicker. A gusseted leg helps meet different sizes with greater ease.
  2. Snaps. Velcro either will stop functioning with lint build up or scratch your baby’s soft skin. Many moms prefer snaps to Velcro because babies can pull apart the Velcro a lot easier than unsnapping the snaps.
  3. Cover material. This is more of a preference for the parents than the child. Since the cover does not touch the baby how the cover feels is of no consequence.

Important Parts And What Parents Like

Patterns, prints etc are also for the parents. The important part of the fabric is how does it wash and wear. Is it easy to clean multiple times and still hold up and maintain its properties of breathability? Let’s face it; having a cover that needs little thought on how to wash it is the best for moms.

Do you only enter giveaways that offer specific brands of cloth diapers? If so which ones?

I enter giveaways for ones that I like. Having been using cloth for 6 years now (last 3 kids) I have a few brands that just don’t work for us. so I haven’t been entering for those. I rather let people who might like them win. I have ALWAYS wanted to try a totsbots diaper. That’s one i haven’t got my hands on yet.
